Author John Murphy will present an overview on snakes with an emphasis on what we have learned about them in the last ten years. Copies of Murphy's book will be for sale and some of the museum's snakes will be on hand for visiting!

Dissection Workshop: Sharks

August 6, 10-11:30 am

Non-members: $20/person, Members: $18/person
Dan Mitchell, biology teacher at Kishwaukee College, will lead participants through the dissection of a shark. Everyone gets their own specimen. This class is open to ages 9 through adult; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult (no fee for accompanying adult). Space is limited, register today by calling 815-895-9777.

Fossil Find!

August 7, 9-11:30 am

$20/person or $55/family

Try your hand at fossil hunting at Vulcan Materials Quarry. We will meet at the quarry and learn about mining and fossils before heading into the field. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, call 815-895-9777 to register.

Summer Camp: If I Ran the Museum

August 10-13

9-11:00 am - entering 1st-3rd grade

1-3:00 pm - entering 4th grade and up

Non-members: $60/child
Members: $55/child

Our August camp, If I Ran the Museum, gives campers the chance to explore every part of the museum. Our younger campers will journey through the building, seeing how the museum works and trying their hands at creating collections and exhibits of their own. Older campers will dig in deep, getting to know the ins and outs of museum operations through hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes participation. Monarchs!

Janie Grillo from Monarch Watch will teach us about the Monarch Butterfly's amazing lifecycle and astonishing migration to Mexico. See live butterflies in different life stages and watch Janie tag and release Monarchs at the end of the program! A great program for ages 6 and up, but all are welcome.
