The Midwest Museum of Natural History opened its doors to the public on February 7, 2005. It took years of difficult work to remodel the former memorial Community Center into a natural history museum. Many of the repairs were paid for through generous financial contributions by the citizens of Sycamore and DeKalb County. Additional funds were “secured” through State of Illinois grants. Specifically, in 2003 the MMNH Board of Directors was happy to learn that $175,000 had been granted to complete the financing of repairs and modifications to the building.

Unfortunately, years have passed with these funds still due to the museum. The museum board was forced to find alternate means in which to cover the costs of the repair and modification work which should have been funded by the State.
To date, $50,000 still remains a debt of the museum. The museum board has established an initiative to eliminate this debt and release vital funds which could be better used to enhance the museum.
